WALK WORTHY

Grayson Highlands

fhNear Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia’s two highest mountains, Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5,000 feet high. Facilities include a visitor center, campgrounds, and hiking trails leading to waterfalls and overlooks. Scenic horse trails and a horse camping area with electric and water hookups, stables and parking for trailers are available. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail.

g The balds are inhabited by a herd of introduced ponies allowed to run wild within the confines of the park. The ponies are very accustomed to humans and rarely halt their grazing as hikers pass close by.  Just don’t get behind them. They do kick and trust me, it hurts!

With many rocky outcrops and a few cave like hideaways, this is sure to be a favorite among your trailmen.

This park is located along the Appalachian Trail and is well traveled.  It is an easy day hike or backpacking trip.  There is also a shelter, privy, and spring along the trail.e
